Personal development, health and physical education

At Strathfield South Public School we love engaging in physical activity. At lunchtimes we have equipment for students to use on the grass area.

Students have the opportunity to trial for a PSSA team during Summer or Winter. In Summer, students can trial for Cricket, AFL and tee-ball/softball. In Winter, students can trial for Soccer, Touch Football and Netball. Only a select number of students can be chosen for these teams and students need to show great sportsmanship and skill.

During sporting carnivals, students are part of a house group that they are given upon enrolment. These are:

  • Pemulwuy (Red)
  • Barangaroo (Blue)
  • Freeman (Yellow)
  • Mabo (Green)
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) develops the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes important for students to take positive action to protect and enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing in varied and changing contexts. Physical education is fundamental to the acquisition of movement skills and concepts to enable students to participate in a range of physical activities – confidently, competently and creatively.

Through PDHPE, students develop self-management, interpersonal and movement skills to help them become empowered, self-confident and socially responsible citizens. Students learn in movement, about movement and through movement and are given opportunities to apply and adapt their skills across multiple contexts. The learning experiences in PDHPE provide students with a foundation to actively contribute to, and advocate for, the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others in the community and beyond school.

Students learn about a range of areas in PDHPE including:
  • Strategies to promote identity, resilience and respectful relationships.
  • Movement skills to participate in a range of physical activity.
  • Understand factors that influence health, safety, wellbeing and participation in physical activity.
  • Self-management skills to assist with taking personal responsibility.
  • Develop interpersonal skills for respectful relationships.

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Premiers Sporting Challenge K-6

The NSW Premier's Primary School Sport Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles.

This challenge involves the Kindergarten to Year 6 classes participating in a 10 week sport and physical activity challenge.

The Challenge includes a range of initiatives with one common purpose - to have more students, more active, more of the time!
